Bitumen is used in most cases as roofing material for flat roofs. And this is not surprising, because the price of bitumen is relatively low and it has a long lifespan. Bitumen is also very easy to maintain. Advantages of bitumen
Bitumen or roofing leather is one of the finest materials to work with for us roofers. It also has other advantages:

The lifespan of bitumen is about 25 to 40 years. The product is still being developed, which is why some people are already talking about an even longer lifespan.

Bitumen is an inexpensive roofing material. We estimate a price of between €60 and €95 per m2, including installation.

It is very easy to repair when you have a (small) leak. Cracks in the roofing felt can be easily repaired by melting the pieces back together. This melting is also known as burning the roofing felt. A leak in a bitumen roof can therefore often be repaired within 24 hours.

Bitumen is available in multiple colors, so you can choose colors other than the standard black that may fit better with the rest of your house.

You can burn bitumen up to two times over each other, which is sometimes a convenient solution for a roof leak.
When should you replace your bitumen roof?
Bitumen is a fine type of roofing and very easy to repair. At the moment that there is a leak in your roof, the roofer from VIP Dakservice can fix this in no time. Repairing a bitumen roof is a matter of flowing parts that have been removed from each other together again. Often we can already solve it that way.
Is it a major leak or is your bitumen roof 25 years old? Then it is wise to replace your bitumen roof. This can be a matter of just placing a new layer over it. However, it is advisable to do this only once. Is there already a second layer on and are you experiencing a major leak? Then we remove everything and install a new bitumen roof.
Cost of bitumen roof replacement
Bitumen is not only the easiest type of roofing to work with, it is also relatively the cheapest for your flat roof. We will lay bitumen for you starting at €60 per m². Different types of bitumen
At VIP Dakservice, we generally work with two different types of bitumen: SBS and APP. Both types of bitumen are of high quality, but they differ in some respects. In addition, you can vary in color and shape, although the most chosen color is still gray or black. White bitumen has sustainable advantages. White bitumen is produced in such a way that it helps your home heat up less quickly. A white roof reflects sunlight, which leads to higher efficiency from your solar panels and a less warm house, which you don’t have to cool with air conditioners, for example.
SBS bitumen
SBS bitumen stands for Styreen Butadieen Styreen. SBS bitumen is made of elastomer, which makes this type of bitumen more elastic than APP. The big advantage of SBS is that its elasticity can absorb any movement of the underlying layer (insulation, wood, etc.) well and therefore will not crack easily. SBS is, on the other hand, less resistant to UV radiation when it is not well protected.
APP bitumen
APP bitumen stands for A-tactic polypropylene and is made up of thermoplastic. This type of bitumen is soft at certain ambient temperatures due to this thermoplastic, and therefore APP is better able to withstand UV radiation and other weather influences than SBS bitumen.
POCB roofing
At VIP Dakservice, we primarily work with POCB roofing; a bitumen roofing with fiberglass reinforcement. This type of roofing also has an average lifespan of 25 to 40 years. POCB is an environmentally friendly product and 100% recyclable. Its production has less impact on the environment. The government wants to promote this type of roofing, and therefore you may be eligible for a subsidy. If you want to cover your flat roof with a sustainable product, POCB is the right choice for this reason. Due to the protective layer that this product contains, it also offers an extra high protection against water infiltration, hail damage, and wind loading; so you can guarantee leaks at bay. A pleasant thought.
The installation of POCB roofing is very safe, because no fire is involved. The roofing is mechanically attached and welded with hot air, so there is no risk of fire. You can also walk on a flat roof – provided with POCB – and attach solar panels.
Because POCB is a single-layer roofing, it brings little extra weight for your flat roof, so your roof structure is not under pressure.
Our process for bitumen roofing replacement
Is your bitumen roofing showing signs of wear and tear, or is it completely worn out? We’re here to guide you through the replacement process and ensure you make the best decision for your needs. Here’s what you can expect from us:
1. Discuss requirements
If you want to replace your bitumen roofing, the easiest option is to choose the same material that is already on your roof. Bitumen can always be fused together. You can also add a new layer, but this can only be done once. After that, the roofing will be too heavy. You can also choose a different pattern or color. We will provide you with sound advice so that you can make the best quality and most beautiful choice.
2. Roof Inspection
A roof inspection is free and always part of the application process to properly assess the quality of the roof and the roof structure before starting the job. We can always provide an indicative quote, but before we actually schedule the job, we always come to measure the roof accurately and check for surprises such as rotten parts of the roof trusses. This way, the customer is never faced with unexpected costs.
3. Determine number of m²
A key part of the roof inspection is measuring the number of square meters. The number of square meters determines the price in the quote. To do this, the number of square meters for your roof must be accurately measured. We use advanced materials for this so that we can work sustainably and carefully. However, certain obstacles can make it a bit more difficult, such as a skylight.
4. Quotation
This quote is free and we will send it to you so you can review it at your leisure. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us and we will be happy to adjust the quote as needed.
5. Scheduling assignment
After you accept the quote, we will contact you to schedule a time to replace your roof. We will take into account everyone’s schedules and the time we need to install your roof. We typically schedule jobs for 3 months in advance, but smaller jobs such as replacing roof tiles (only removing the roof tiles and placing the roof tiles) can often be scheduled on shorter notice.
6. Performing assignment
On the agreed-upon date, we will be at your door to go up on the roof. The old roof will be removed, and a new, beautiful roof will be installed in its place. We strive to minimize any disruption caused by the work and will clean up everything when we are finished.
7. Evaluatie
After the project is complete, we will take the time to conduct an evaluation. We will use photos to show you how the roof is constructed. These photos will also be shared with you. How did you experience the entire process? Are you satisfied? Are there any areas for improvement? We also always ask if you would be willing to share your experience with our future customers.
