What is a lead flashing?
Lead flashing is a strip of lead that is used to seal and waterproof the joints between roofs. This can be an attachment between flat roofs, but also between rising walls, from dormer to roof or between chimney and roof.
When the lead flashing is no longer intact, this can eventually cause a leak, which always brings with it collateral damage. It is therefore advisable to have lead flashing checked and replaced as needed in a timely manner.
Another additional advantage of lead flashing is that it insulates your home better. It seals gaps between roof parts, preventing air movement.
When to replace lead flashing?
There are several reasons why lead flashing needs to be replaced:
- Over time, lead flashing becomes thinner and more fragile. Cracks can form in the lead flashing, which can eventually lead to a leak.
- Lead flashing can be applied incorrectly. We regularly see roofs where people have applied lead flashing themselves or have tried to replace it. This is not always a job that is easy to do yourself, so it should still be replaced by a specialist. Leaks can also occur when lead flashing is applied incorrectly, and in that case, it is also recommended to replace it.
Lead flashing alternatives
Lead has a number of advantages and disadvantages. Lead lasts a long time, is soft and flexible, durable, and 100% recyclable. On the other hand, lead can oxidize, is harmful to the environment, is expensive, and is therefore even susceptible to theft.
