What is the difference between bitumen and roofing leather?

There is no difference between the words “bitumen” and “roofing leather”. Bitumen is more well-known, but it is the same as roofing leather. Bitumen is made from refined petroleum. It is obtained by removing the lighter fractions of petroleum from crude oil during the refining process. The heaviest component remains, which is bitumen, a dark and viscous liquid. This is why it is also called roofing felt or tar felt.

Roofing leather is available in multiple colors, so you can choose colors other than the standard black that may better match the rest of your home.
You can melt roofing leather over itself a maximum of two times, which is sometimes a quick and easy solution for a roof leak.

When should you replace your roof leather materials?

Repairing roofing leather is a matter of melting the pieces that have been removed back together. We can often fix the leak in this way.

If it is a major leak or your roof is 25 years old, it is wise to replace your roof. This can be done by simply placing a new layer on top. However, it is advised to only do this once. If there is already a second layer and you are experiencing a major leak, we will remove everything and install new roofing leather.

Cost of roof leather replacement

Roofing leather is not only the easiest type of roofing material to work with, it is also relatively the cheapest for your flat roof. Different types of roof leather materials

At VIP Dakservice, we generally work with two different types of bitumen, also known as roofing leather: SBS and APP. Both types are of high quality, but they differ slightly in some respects. In addition, you can vary in color and shape, although the most popular color is still gray or black. White roofing leather has sustainable advantages. White roofing leather is produced in such a way that it ensures that your home does not heat up as quickly. A white roof reflects sunlight, which results in more yield from your solar panels and a less warm house, which you then do not have to cool with air conditioners.

SBS roofing leather

SBS roofing leather stands for Styreen Butadieen Styreen. SBS roofing leather is made of elastomer, which makes this type of roofing leather more elastic than APP. The main advantage of SBS is that its elasticity can absorb any movement of the underlying layer (insulation, wood, etc.) well and therefore will not tear easily. SBS is, on the other hand, less resistant to a lot of UV radiation when it is not well protected.

APP roofing leather

APP roofing leather stands for Atactic Polypropylene and is made up of thermoplastic. This type of roofing leather is flexible at certain ambient temperatures due to this thermoplastic, and therefore APP is better able to withstand UV radiation and other weather influences than SBS roofing leather.

3. Determine number of m²

A key part of the roof inspection is measuring the number of square meters. The number of square meters determines the price in the quote. To do this, the number of square meters for your roof must be accurately measured. We use advanced materials for this so that we work sustainably and carefully. However, sometimes certain obstacles make it a bit more difficult, such as a skylight.

4. Quotation

5. Scheduling assignment

Once you approve the quote, we will contact you to schedule an appointment to replace your roof. We will take into account all schedules and the time we need to install your roof.

6. Performing assignment

We’ll be at your doorstep, ready to start the roof replacement process at the agreed-upon time. We’ll efficiently remove the old roof and replace it with a beautiful new one, ensuring minimal disruption to your daily routine. Once the work is complete, we’ll thoroughly clean up the area, leaving your surroundings pristine.

7. Evaluation

Once the project is complete, we will take some time to conduct an evaluation. We will use photos to show you how the roof was built. These photos will also be shared with you. How did you experience the entire process? Are you satisfied? Are there any areas for improvement? We also always ask if you would be willing to share your experience with our future customers.
