Thatched roof
What do we mean by replacing a thatched roof?
A thatched roof involves different (maintenance) work than a tiled roof. With a tiled roof, a tile sometimes needs to be replaced or straightened. With a thatched roof, the thatch thins out at a certain point and can then be added. If the quality of the thatch is so poor, it is advised to replace your thatched roof.
VIP Dakservice does not employ roofing specialists who also cover reed. Therefore, you will be referred to a thatcher for such a job. However, we can help you when you want to replace your thatched roof for a tiled roof. We remove all the thatch from your roof and dispose of it. We check the roof structure and any insulation and then make sure your roof is neatly covered with tiles of your own choosing.
Advantages and disadvantages of a thatched roof
Like any roof, a thatched roof has advantages and disadvantages.
The advantages of a thatched roof
Appearance
A thatched roof has a very beautiful appearance. Appearance is the main reason why people choose a thatched roof. A thatched roof gives your house a rural or luxurious character and that is what many people find very attractive.
Sustainable
Reed is a natural product and also very durable. If you are tired of your thatched roof or if the thatch needs replacement, the old thatch can still be used as fertilizer.
Insulation
A thatched roof is a good insulator. Homes with a thatched roof are generally cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter thanks to the thatch on the roof.

Disadvantages of a thatched roof
Expensive insurance
Depending on how your thatched roof is laid, your home’s insurance can be very pricey. This has to do with the fire hazard of your roof/home. If you have a thatched roof on a dense substructure, it is less of a fire hazard.
In addition, home or building insurance cannot be taken out with every insurer because some insurers do not want to take the risk.
Lifetime
The lifespan of a thatched roof is shorter than the lifespan of most other types of roofing materials. On paper, we say a thatched roof lasts about 25 years. In practice, we also come across roofs that are 40 years old, but to reach this age, proper maintenance is crucial.
Water is the greatest enemy
The biggest enemy of a thatched roof is water. The Netherlands receives a relatively large amount of rain, and your thatched roof is not happy about that. Water causes moss to develop more quickly on the roof. This leaves no room for sun and air to penetrate, which can cause rot or mold. Especially roofs with a lot of shade suffer from this. Therefore, annual maintenance is very important.
Maintenance
The maintenance of a thatched roof is very important. As mentioned above, there are plenty of reasons to make sure your roof is properly maintained. The annual maintenance of a thatched roof easily costs about € 700,- and can reach up to € 1,500,-.
Do the advantages of your thatched roof no longer outweigh the disadvantages? Then it’s time to replace your thatched roof. Make an appointment with our roofing specialist from VIP Dakservice for a free roof inspection and quote for the replacement of your thatched roof.
Is a thatched roof more expensive than a tile roof?
We are often asked whether a thatched roof is more expensive than a tile roof. Basically, the answer to that question is no. You spend about the same amount of money on a thatched roof as on a tiled roof. However, a thatched roof generally does not last as long as a tiled roof, and the maintenance of a thatched roof is more expensive than that of a tiled roof.
Potentially, a thatched roof and a tiled roof are comparable in terms of cost, but at the end of the day a tiled roof is a lot cheaper (not to mention the difference in insurance costs).
